Hats don’t suit me

I don’t look good in hats, they don’t suit me. I have a big head and hats don’t fit. I feel like a wanker wearing a hat. My face is too small, my head is a weird shape. I feel too self conscious and people are looking at me, judging me. I hear this every day. I am a hat maker.

We are all human, wired to be social, to be part of the tribe. The lone hunter, the social weaver, the loudest in the room, the silent observer. The one who blends into the background or the most colourful. The outspoken challenger, the quiet conformist.  The world beater or someone who beats their own drum. We are varied yet similar complex yet simple and all have our own voice. A unique perspective of how we see our world and of how the world sees us. We communicate through behaviour, language and most conveniently through our appearance.

Clothes protect us from the elements. Give us the ability to survive in harsh conditions. Essential for our survival and evolution they signal how we wish to be seen and how we believe we are seen. Uniforms signal authority, danger, safety, leadership and conformity. Fashion and style are the same. You may prefer an old pair of sneakers and tee shirt,  or an Italian suit and loafers. A mini skirt or long flowing dress. Sandals or stilettos.

To say I don’t look good in hats, that hats don’t fit me, hats don’t suit me or that I cannot wear a hat is a misnomer. The truth is there is a hat for everyone.  Just like shoes, a jacket, a shirt, a pair of sunglasses, hats suit all of us. Your hat will protect you, expose you, give you courage and confidence or make you feel inconspicuous and neutral. Whether it’s a cap, a fedora, beanie or 10 gallon cowboy hat there is a hat for all of us. A hat will comfort and protect, reflect your outer personality and inner feeling of self.  It’s a wonderful, exciting, scary, dangerous world out there and life is super short. Don’t be afraid to be you and embrace all the wonders we have on offer. Jump in, explore, embrace, experience, and don’t be afraid. Get yourself a hat, be brave if that’s what it takes. You will be liberated and won’t look back.
