Australian-Made Beanies
A beanie seems like a simple thing until you try a few on. One sits too high, another has too much fabric at the top, and the one you like the look of might not feel right around your ears. Just like a brimmed hat or a cap, the shape makes a difference.
Our beanie range includes short and longer wool styles, fisherman beanies, cable and twist knits with pom poms, and an acrylic option if you prefer not to wear wool. There is no one shape you have to wear. Start with what feels comfortable, then try the cuff and length a few different ways.
Short or long?
If you like a closer, neater shape, our Australian Made Wool Short Beanie is a good starting point. It has a fine rib knit and is lighter and finer than our wool fisherman style.
A short beanie gives a different outline from one with more fabric above the head. Neither is better. You might like the opening above your ears, or prefer more coverage. Think about how you actually want to wear it, not just how it looks in a photograph.
Our Australian Made Long Wool Beanie offers more length and a turn-up cuff. Made in Melbourne with two layers of Australian extra-fine Merino wool, it is an option if you prefer that longer shape.
The fisherman beanie
The Australian Made Wool Fisherman Beanie has a thicker rib knit than our short wool style. Wear it rolled up for a shorter profile or unroll it for more length.
Try changing the cuff before deciding a beanie does not suit you. A deeper fold changes how much fabric sits above your head and where the opening rests. A small adjustment can make quite a difference.
Texture and pom poms
If you enjoy a more textured knit, consider a cable or twist style. Our cable-knit pom pom beanie is knitted in Melbourne from Australian lambswool and finished with a matching wool pom pom.
The Shiraz twist wool beanie offers another knit pattern, also with a matching wool pom pom. These styles give a different finish from a plain rib without needing much thought about the rest of your outfit.
You do not have to choose a neutral colour because it seems practical. Try a colour you like against your face and with the coat or jacket you wear most often.
Prefer a non-wool option?
Our Australian Made Acrylic Fisherman Beanie is knitted in Melbourne and can be worn cuffed or uncuffed.
It is worth considering if you prefer an acrylic beanie rather than wool. Check the material information for the individual style instead of assuming every beanie in the range has the same composition.
How should a beanie fit?
The opening should feel secure without digging in. You should not need to keep pulling it back into place, and you should not feel you have to put up with an uncomfortable band because you like the shape.
A stretchy knit or a one-size label does not mean every beanie will feel the same on every head. The knit, length and cuff all affect how it sits.
If you wear glasses, try the beanie with them on. If you like your ears covered, check that it gives you the coverage you want without pulling it down awkwardly. Look at it from the side as well as the front.
Looking after your beanie
Check the care label for your particular beanie before washing. Different fibres and constructions can need different care, so do not assume the instructions for one style apply to the whole range.
Need a hand choosing?
Let us know whether you prefer a short, close-fitting beanie or something longer, whether you want your ears covered, and if you have a material preference. That gives us a useful starting point.
Email info@hats.com.au if you need a hand with your shape and fit selection. The aim is a beanie you enjoy wearing, not one you keep adjusting.
